Salmonella Infections

General Information on Salmonella Infections

Salmonella Infection results in gastroenteritis and sometimes local tissue infections. There are over 2,000 known types of Salmonella. Each type can produce gastrointestinal upset, typhoid fever, and specific localized infections. Contaminated foods are likely sources of salmonella. Commonly contaminated foods include: meat, poultry, eggs, egg products, and raw milk. Another source is infected pet reptiles. Up to 90% of pet reptiles in the US are affected with Salmonella. Although extremely rare, Salmonella can leave the intestines and travel through the bloodstream infecting the bones, joints, or heart valves. Doctors can diagnose Salmonella infection by culturing a rectal swab or by sending a stool sample or blood sample to a lab for confirmation.

Treatments For Salmonella Infections

Symptoms of Salmonella infection start 12 to 48 hours after ingestion and typically last between 1 and 4 days, but can last much longer. Drinking plenty of fluids and eating a bland diet is the most common treatment. Antibiotics are not usually given, with the exception of infants and anyone with a weakened immune system, since they are at higher risk for complications. In the rare case of infection that spreads to the bloodstream, antibiotics are given for 4 to 6 weeks. A patient with infection in the blood vessels, heart valves, or other organs may require surgery and long term antibiotic therapy.
