Runner's Diarrhea
General Information on Runner's Diarrhea
Runner’s diarrhea, also known as “runner’s trots,” is characterized by frequent loose, watery stools during or immediately after intense exercise. It most commonly occurs in long distance or marathon runners. What causes runner’s diarrhea is still unclear. One theory is that during intense exercise, blood flows away from the intestines, causing diarrhea.
Symptoms of Runner's Diarrhea
Symptoms include:
Intestinal cramping
Diarrhea
frequent loose, watery stools during or immediately after intense exercise
Treatments For Runner's Diarrhea
Dietary changes may help prevent runner’s diarrhea. Avoid foods that are high in fiber such as whole grains, fruit, beans, and broccoli to prevent runner’s diarrhea. Also avoid artificial sweeteners and limit caffeine intake. Wear loose fitting clothing since clothing that is too tight around the abdomen may contribute to diarrhea.
