Premenstrual Syndrome
General Information on Premenstrual Syndrome
Premenstrual syndrome, otherwise known as PMS, involves a series of symptoms that begin 1 to 2 weeks before a menstrual period and usually ends once menstruation begins. Statistically, around half of all women experience PMS at sometime during their lives. For many women the symptoms may be monthly. PMS commonly affects women between the ages of 25 to 40. There is no known cause. However, alterations in hormone production, such as estrogen and progesterone are most likely the cause.
Symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome
There a very many symptoms that have been clinically associated with PMS. Most women do not experience all of them. There have been over 150 reported symptoms attributed to the condition. These are some of the most common:
Nervousness
Irritability
Depressed mood
Fatigue
Mood swings
Emotional instability
Headaches
Increased sex drive
Decreased sex drive
Dizziness
Fainting
Tender or swollen breasts
Digestive problems
Constipation
Diarrhea
Bloating
Acne
Decreased urination
Increased minor infection
Fluid retention in ankles hands or face
Treatments For Premenstrual Syndrome
The best way to diagnoses PMS is to keep a menstrual diary. Keep a log of your physical and emotional symptoms, at what times they occur, and the circumstances surrounding their occurrence. Your doctor can perform a physical exam to rule out other disorders. Treatment usually involves education, dietary changes, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Rarely, drug therapy such as antidepressants, hormone supplementation, or anti-inflammatory medications may be recommended. Vitamins and supplements (B6, magnesium, vitamin E, Calcium, etc) may help alleviate symptoms. Individual or couples counseling is suggested to help patients and couple understand and cope with the symptoms.
