Pityriasis Alba
General Information on Pityriasis Alba
Pityriasis alba is a common disorder of the skin that temporarily causes a loss of pigmentation in the cheek. Loss of color may also occur in the neck and shoulders. The condition is most common in children, but may also occur in adults between the ages of 20 and 30.
Symptoms of Pityriasis Alba
The most common symptoms of Pityriasis alba is the development of white or pinkish patches of skin. The patches may have small, need-point white bumps, known as papules. The patches are usually smooth. Additionally, the discolored patches are usually the most apparent during the summer because they do not tan. There may be only one patch or many. They are not known to cause any pain, but mild irritation and itch may occur.
Treatments For Pityriasis Alba
A physical examination is all that is usually required for diagnosis. No treatment is available for the condition. Skin creams may help alleviate dryness and irritation. Pityriasis may come and go for years. In many cases, the condition clears up on its own with age.
