Treatments For Panic Disorder
Drug and behavior therapy can usually control the symptoms of panic disorder. Drugs that are used to treat panic disorder include anti-depressants (SSRI's or MAOI's), and anti anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines work faster than antidepressants, but are thought to cause drug dependance. An effective drug, or combination of drugs will greatly reduce the frequency of panic attacks. Some people stay on medication long term because without it, the panic attacks return. Psychotherapy is also recommended. Psychotherapy includes education and counseling by a therapist who can provide general information about the disorder and its treatment.
