Orbital Cellulitis
General Information on Orbital Cellulitis
Orbital cellulitis is an infection of the orbit. The orbit is seven bones that make up the eye socket. There are many different ways for an infection of the orbit to develop. Infection from other parts of the body, such as the sinus infections or infections spread to the orbit from the bloodstream, or infections that develop as a result of an injury to the orbit are the most common causes of orbital cellulitis. Left untreated, orbital cellulitis can spread to other parts of the body and can even lead to blindness.
Symptoms of Orbital Cellulitis
Some of the symptoms of orbital cellulitis may be:
Fever
Pain
Swollen eyelids
Swollen eyeball
Impaired vision
Bulging eye
Impaired eye movement
Treatments For Orbital Cellulitis
The treatment for orbital cellulitis is typically antibiotics. The severity of the case of orbital cellulitis determines the manner in which the antibiotics are received. In mild to moderate cases of orbital cellulitis, oral antibiotics are prescribed. In severe cases of orbital cellulitis, antibiotics may be given intravenously. In some cases, surgery is necessary to drain abscess.
