Nasal Fracture
General Information on Nasal Fracture
A nasal fracture, or broken nose, is one of the most common facial injuries. Nasal fractures occur after blunt trauma to the nose. When the nasal bones break, the mucus membrane lining the nose usually tears, causing a nose bleed. Pain, swelling, and bruising are often accompanied. Nasal fractures can cause deformities in the nose and should be observed by a physician.
Symptoms of Nasal Fracture
Symptoms may include:
Bleeding from the nose
Pain
Swelling
Bruising
Deformity
Treatments For Nasal Fracture
The tissue surrounding the nose swells quickly making it difficult for a doctor to find the break. Because of this, a broken nose should be evaluated promptly. Doctors can usually diagnose a broken nose by checking the bridge of the nose for changes in shape and alignment or the unusual movement of the bones. Applying ice packs and keeping the head elevated helps to manage pain and swelling. 3 to 5 days after the injury, if the swelling has gone down, a doctor may push the broken pieces of bone back into place. Once the bones are in their normal position, a splint is placed over the nose. Nasal fractures take about 6 weeks to heal.
