Myocarditis
General Information on Myocarditis
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, which often leads to weakened functioning of the heart. Middle aged men are most commonly affected. However myocarditis can affect both males and females of any age. Generally, myocarditis is a complication due to another illness. The most common cause is a viral infection, thought such inflammation can be a result of a variety of conditions.
Symptoms of Myocarditis
Often myocarditis occurs with little to no symptoms. These symptoms are often quite moderate and vague.
These symptoms can include:
Chest pain or discomfort
Shortness of breath during physical exertion
Fatigue
Aching muscles
Irregular heartbeat
Fever
When severe, myocarditis can lead to congestive heart failure.
When this occurs the following symptoms can be present:
Difficulty breathing while at rest
Prolonged rapid heartbeat, even while at rest
Distended veins in the neck area
Swollen feet and ankles
Treatments For Myocarditis
A physical exam is necessary for a conclusive diagnosis. Common medical procedures are chest x-rays, biopsy of the heart tissue, heart function tests, and blood tests. Thought there is no particular medical treatment for myocarditis, symptom treatment, rest, and drug prescription to fight any infection are often a part of the recovery process. For severe cases, especially in cases with complications, hospital care may be required. If you notice any of the above symptoms, it is advisable to speak with your doctor. If any of the more severe symptoms occur, see a doctor immediately, as myocarditis can sometimes lead to heart failure.
