Mole


General Information on Mole

Moles are small skin growths that develop from pigment-producing cell in the skin. Moles vary in size and texture. They can be small or large, flat, raised, smooth, or rough. Moles are most commonly brown or black in color, but can be yellow-brown or flesh colored. Moles can be found on almost anyone. They usually develop during childhood or adolescence. Most moles are harmless, but can sometimes develop into or resemble a type of skin cancer known as malignant melanoma. Any changes in a mole should be observed by a dermatologist. See a dermatologist if you experience changes in a mole such as: darkening, inflammation, irregular border, color changes, bleeding, itching, or pain.

Growths on skin- flat, raised, smooth or rough

Growths on skin- brown, black, yellow-brown, or flesh colored

Treatments For Mole

Most moles are harmless and do not require removal however, if the patient considers them unattractive or irritating, they can be removed. Doctors remove moles by applying a local anesthetic to the skin, then using a scalpel or surgical blade they cut or shave the mole. Any changes in a mole should be observed by a dermatologist.
