General Information on Laxative Abuse
Laxatives are drugs that promote bowel movements. They are used to treat constipation. Some people, particularly those with eating disorders, abuse laxatives because they believe doing so will help them lose weight. Laxative abuse may cause diarrhea which can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Using laxatives for an extended period of time can cause damage to the large intestine which may lead to severe constipation. Excessive or inappropriate use of laxatives is dangerous.

Symptoms may include:
Excessive diarrhea
Dehydration
Electrolyte imbalance
Treatments For Laxative Abuse
Common methods for treating laxative abuse symptoms include counseling, education, medication and in severe cases, hospitalization. The method of treatment is determined on a case by case basis and may vary based on the patient’s needs.
