Laryngitis
General Information on Laryngitis
Laryngitis occurs when the voice box, or larynx, becomes inflamed. It is commonly caused by a viral infection in the upper airways, such as the common cold. Laryngitis can also occur after excessive use of the voice, allergic reaction, and inhaling cigarette smoke. Laryngitis is considered short term, or acute, if it lasts no more than a few days. Otherwise it is considered chronic, and may last more than 3 weeks.
Symptoms of Laryngitis
Symptoms may include:
Hoarseness
Change in voice (voice may become deeper)
Tickle in throat
Difficulty swallowing
Loss of voice
Sore throat
Fever
Treatments For Laryngitis
Doctors generally diagnose laryngitis based on the symptoms and the changes in the patient’s voice. Some doctors will look down into the throat to check for redness and swelling of the larynx. Treatment includes resting the voice, drinking plenty of fluids, and inhaling steam. Antibiotics are only given when laryngitis is the result of a bacterial infection, such as bronchitis.
