Ileus

General Information on Ileus

Ileus is the temporary blockage of the small and/or large intestinal wall. Ileus has two forms. There is paralytic ileus which is a non-mechanical blockage, and there is adynamic ileus, which is a mechanical blockage. Paralytic ileus, unlike adynamic ileus, does not lead to a rupture. Ileus occurs when peristalsis stops. Peristalsis is a rhythmic contraction that moves things through the bowel. Some of the causes of ileus are infection, blood clot in the abdomen, injury to the intestinal artery or vein, kidney failure, abdominal surgery, certain medications, under active thyroid gland, low potassium levels, high calcium levels, or abnormal electrolyte levels in the blood.

Treatments For Ileus

The treatment for ileus is to first relieve the pressure of the build-up of gas and liquid that was not passed. This is done by passing a tube through the anus into the intestines. The person is not allowed to eat or drink until the peristalsis normalizes. Since the person cannot eat or drink, intravenous fluids are given. Certain medications that help to improve the peristalsis may be prescribed. Should the situation be severe enough, surgery may be required.
