Anemia During Pregnancy

General Information on Anemia During Pregnancy

Anemia develops when the body is lacking an adequate supply of iron. Pregnancy doubles the amount of iron needed. During pregnancy most women need an iron supplement because the average pregnant woman does not absorb enough iron. If a woman has anemia prior to her pregnancy, or if she develops anemia during her pregnancy, she may need to take a higher dose of iron than other pregnant women.

Treatments For Anemia During Pregnancy

Anemia during pregnancy is usually found through a routine blood test. Anemia is treated using iron supplements and through diet. Taking iron supplements and eating foods rich in iron helps to reverse anemia. Examples of foods that are rich in iron include spinach, kale, collard greens, eggs, liver, and kidney beans. Taking iron supplements with a citrus fruit juice may help to increase iron absorption. Iron supplements may cause mild upset stomach and constipation. Talk to your doctor before taking any supplements during your pregnancy.
