Heartburn is the term used to describe the burning sensation of the chest and upper abdomen caused by a back flow of acid from the stomach to esophagus. There are several conditions that can lead to heartburn, and it is very common to for pregnant women to experience repeated heartburn during the entire duration of their pregnancy. Heartburn as the result of pregnancy may fluctuate in intensity, coming and going, until delivery. Though heartburn can result in great discomfort, it is not harmful for the baby.


Symptoms of Heartburn During Pregnancy

Symptoms for heartburn can range or fluctuate from barely noticeable to very severe. Symptoms include:

Burning pain located in the center chest and upper, center abdomen
Unpleasant or acidic taste in mouth
Bad breath
Belching or burping

Treatments For Heartburn During Pregnancy

Successful treatment is generally practiced through self-treatment. Some methods of self-treatment may involve diet alterations and taking preventative measures such as ingesting over the counter anti-acid and symptoms relief medications if needed. Avoid medications if possible. In addition, avoid eating before bedtime, drinking large quantities of fluids during meal times, highly seasoned foods, extremely hot or cold liquids, and other foods which may cause a higher acidic reaction during digestion, such as foods with a high tomato or alcohol concentrations. If symptoms persist, contact your doctor for further examination.
