Anaphylaxis
General Information on Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis is a sudden and potentially life threatening allergic reaction. The reaction is commonly caused by drugs, insect stings, and foods, but can be caused by a number of allergens. Similar to other allergic reactions, anaphylactic reaction doesn’t usually occur after the first exposure to an allergen, but may occur after recurring exposure. Anaphylactic reactions usually begin within 1 to 15 minutes of exposure to an allergen. The reaction progresses rapidly and can be fatal if immediate emergency treatment is not given.
Symptoms of Anaphylaxis
Symptoms may include:
Heart palpitations
Anxiety
Tingling sensations
Itchy skin
Flushed skin
Throbbing in the ears
Coughing
Sneezing
Hives
Swelling
Difficulty breathing
Wheezing
Low blood pressure
Confusion
Loss of consciousness
Treatments For Anaphylaxis
An anaphylactic reaction can be fatal. To treat an anaphylactic reaction, an epinephrine injection is given promptly. People who have these reactions should always carry a self injecting syringe of epinephrine and antihistamine tablets in case of emergency. Most of the time this treatment will stop the reaction however after a severe allergic reaction it is advised to seek emergency care.
