Grief
General Information on Grief
Grief, or bereavement, is the emotional reaction following a traumatic event in a person’s life. The event is usually initiated by the death of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job, loss of a body part, terminal or debilitating illness and other significant losses. Grief is a normal psychological response to loss and tragedy. Many people experience different levels and durations of grief as they deal with losses differently. There is no single set of guidelines for a normal grieving period. Personal observations and the observations of close friends and family are generally the best ways of detecting whether or not grief has become a serious long-lasting condition. If this is the case, medical help will usually aid in alleviating the symptoms and effects of grief.
