Granuloma - Pyogenic

General Information on Granuloma - Pyogenic

Pyogenic granuloma is a fairly common, benign skin growth. It is not contagious. In addition, pyogenic granuloma may develop upon skin throughout the entire body, though, generally most cases involve the skin located on the head, neck, and fingers. It most commonly occurs in children between the ages of 5 and 15 and in women who have recently conceived.

Symptoms of Granuloma - Pyogenic

The primary symptom of pyogenic granuloma is the development of a single, small skin eruption or bump also referred to as a papule. In most cases these papules only develop as a single bump, however, in some cases multiple bumps may appear. These papules generally begin as very small, “pinhead” sized bumps and grow over time to sometimes exceed a half inch in width. Other attributes of papules caused by pyogenic granuloma may include the following:

Bumps may appear brown, scarlet, or blueish-black in color
Bleed easily when injured or agitated
Bumps do not evoke pain or skin irritation
In some cases, papules may ulcerate, or become open, and form a crust as a result of dried fluid which may ooze from the bump that has recently ulcerated

Treatments For Granuloma - Pyogenic

There are currently several ways of removing these skin growths. In many cases they are scraped off with a medical device called a “curette” and then cauterized in order to aid in the healing of the wounded tissue. In other cases, laser surgery or chemicals such as silver nitrate may be used for removal. The growths may also be removed through surgery. Finally, in some instances, pyogenic granuloma is the adverse result of a medication. If medication is deciphered to be the underlying cause of the growth, ceasing use will usually lead to healing. If you believe yourself to be experiencing symptoms similar to those listed above, talk to your doctor for further examination.
