General Information on Depression
Depression is a feeling of intense sadness beyond an appropriate length of time. There are many factors which may contribute to depression, such as hereditary, drugs (including prescription drugs) , physical disorders, emotionally distress, and loss of a loved one. Depression usually lasts about 6 months if left untreated but can last even longer, sometimes recurring several times over a lifetime.

Feelings of sadness
Feelings of hopelessness
Negative thoughts
Changes in appetite
Difficulty sleeping
Restlessness
Weight loss
Weight gain
Feeling anxious
Irritability
Lack of interest in voluntary activities
Loss of energy
Loss of sexual desire
Indecisiveness
Difficulty concentrating
Intense feelings of guilt
Physical pain
Thoughts of suicide or death
Hallucinations
Treatments For Depression
Drug and behavioral therapy are the most commonly used methods in treating depression. For severe cases of depression, electroconvulsive therapy may be used. Treatments may be used by themselves, or as a combination treatments. What may work for some, may not work for others. Talk to your doctor if you have symptoms of depression.
