Constipation


General Information on Constipation

Constipation is a condition that occurs when a patient experiencing fewer bowel movements than usual and/or difficulty passing stool. According to most doctors there is no specific number of bowel movements that is considered normal. The number of bowel movements differs from person to person. Some doctors contend that a healthy person should at least 1 bowel movement per day. Constipation is usually determined by observations of symptoms and changes and bowel frequency among individual patients. Most instances of constipation are harmless. In some cases, it may be a sign that something may be wrong with the body.


Symptoms of Constipation

Symptoms of constipation include:

Hard, dry or lumpy stools
Fewer than three bowel movements a week
Having to strain during bowel movements
Pain with bowel movements
Bleeding (sometimes)
Feeling bloated
Feeling sluggish
Abdominal pain
Feeling like you still need to go after bowel movement is complete

Treatments For Constipation

In most cases, diagnosis is determined by the patient’s observation of their own symptoms. If constipation is cause for concern, see your doctor. Your doctor will perform an examination and ask questions about your symptoms, diet and activities. Usually no treatment is necessary. Your doctor may recommend exercise and increased fiber and fluid intake. Other treatments may be prescribed such as probiotics, stool softeners, mild laxatives, or an enema. Almost all cases are curable with time and self-care.
