Bronchitis - Chronic

General Information on Bronchitis - Chronic

Chronic bronchitis is a condition that occurs when the mucous lining of the main air passage to the lungs (the bronchi) becomes inflamed or swollen. Bronchitis is generally caused by repeated irritation of the bronchial tubes over long durations of time, sometimes spanning for years. Because the bronchial tubes are rarely irritated enough to produce bronchitis, bronchitis usually accompanies other diseases. Smoking greatly increases the chances of developing chronic bronchitis.

Symptoms of Bronchitis - Chronic

Because chronic bronchitis is a chronic condition, unlike other forms of bronchitis, it generally appears less abruptly than other medical conditions. It has a tendency to develop over time, sometimes taking anywhere from months to years to become clinically noticeable. As a result, symptoms may appear slowly. If you have been experiencing a mucus-producing cough almost every day of the entire month, for over 3 months of the year, continuing for 2 or more consecutive years, see your doctor immediately. These may be signs of bronchitis or possibly other, more serious medical condition.

Treatments For Bronchitis - Chronic

Unfortunately, chronic bronchitis is not curable. However, through standard medical treatment bronchitis symptoms can be relieved almost entirely. It is important to seek the care of your primary health care professional if you believe yourself to be experiencing signs of chronic bronchitis in order to avoid complications. If left untreated, some complications from chronic bronchitis may include pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or other more serious heart disorders. Finally, the most common cause of chronic bronchitis is smoking. If you have developed chronic bronchitis, or if members of your family have a history of health complications from smoking, be aware of the risks. Stopping smoking can greatly enhance your chances of prevention.
