Bronchiolitis
General Information on Bronchiolitis
Bronchiolitis is a viral infection in the airways of infants and young children. It is most commonly caused by the syncytial virus, although other viruses are sometimes involved. Infection causes inflammation of the airways, causing the airways to narrow, making it difficult to breathe. Bronchiolitis usually affects children younger than 18 months old. Bronchiolitis is contagious and can affect anyone, although for those who are older, the virus usually causes only a mild cold.
Symptoms of Bronchiolitis
Symptoms may include:
Runny nose
Sneezing
Mild fever
Coughing
Difficulty breathing
Rapid breathing
Wheezing
Congestion
Difficulty drinking fluids
Dehydration
Treatments For Bronchiolitis
Most children with Bronchiolitis recover at home within 5 days. Clear fluids should be given frequently and in small amounts. A child should be hospitalized if they experience increasing difficulty in breathing, bluish skin, fatigue, or dehydration. While in the hospital, the child’s oxygen levels will be monitored and a ventilator may be used to assist the child in breathing. If the child cannot drink fluids, fluids will be given intravenously. Infants who are premature or who have preexisting health conditions may be given the antiviral drug ribavirin. Antibiotics do not cure Bronchiolitis.
