Copper Deficiency
General Information on Copper Deficiency
Copper deficiency is rare in healthy people. It commonly occurs in premature infants who are recovering from severe malnutrition or who have persistent diarrhea. Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and cystic fibrosis may cause copper deficiency. In addition, high amounts of zinc or iron can decrease the absorption of copper.
Symptoms of Copper Deficiency
Symptoms include:
Fatigue
Anemia
Bleeding under the skin
Damaged blood vessels
Enlarged heart
Treatments For Copper Deficiency
A doctor may suspect copper deficiency in a patient based on their symptoms. A blood test is given to check the levels of copper and ceruloplasmin (a protein that contains copper) in the blood. If the blood test indicates low levels of copper and ceruloplasmin, the patient is treated using a copper supplement.
