Perichondritis
General Information on Perichondritis
Perichondritis is an infection of the cartilage of the outer ear. It can be caused by injury, burns, insect bites, or ear piercings. The infection also tends to occur in people who have a weak immune system and in those who have diabetes. Pus collects between the cartilage and the layer of connective tissue around it. In some cases the pus cuts off the blood supply to the cartilage, destroying it which can lead to a deformed ear.
Symptoms of Perichondritis
Symptoms may include:
Outer Ear Pain
Ear Swelling
Ear Redness
Pus - Outer Ear
Deformation of the ear (in severe cases)
Treatments For Perichondritis
To treat a mild case of Perichondritis, oral antibiotics are given. Severe infections may require antibiotics that are given intravenously. The type of antibiotic given depends on the severity of the infection and the kind of bacteria that is causing it. Severe infections, in which pus becomes trapped under the tissue, may require surgery.
