Ankle Sprain
General Information on Ankle Sprain
An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments in the ankle are injured. The most common way a sprain occurs is when the ankle rolls outward, causing the sole of the foot to invert. This injury usually occurs when a person walks on uneven ground or steps off a curb. Loose ligaments in the ankle, weak leg muscles, and certain types of shoes may also cause the ankle to roll outward.
Symptoms of Ankle Sprain
Symptoms may include:
Pain or Soreness
Swelling
Bruising
Difficulty walking
Bleeding under the skin (severe sprain)
Treatments For Ankle Sprain
A doctor will examine the ankle and try to identify the severity of ligament damage. X-rays are often taken to determine whether a bone is broken. Stress X-rays and MRI may indicate the extent of ligament damage. Treatment depends on how severe the sprain is. Mild sprains are usually using the RICE treatment, which includes resting the foot, applying ice to the affected area, compressing the injured area with an elastic bandage, and finally elevating the ankle. For moderate sprains a walking cast may be applied and left in place for up to 3 weeks. A severe sprain needs immediate medical attention, sometimes surgery. Physical therapy is tried first. It is used to restore muscles and improve balance. For people who frequently sprain their ankles, wearing soft or rigid ankle supports or using inserts in the shoe may be helpful.
