Fanconi's Syndrome

General Information on Fanconi's Syndrome

Fanconi’s Syndrome is a rare disorder in which there are excess amounts glucose, bicarbonate, phosphates, uric acid, amino acids, sodium, and potassium excreted into the urine instead of being reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. The excessive excretions are caused by a malfunction of the proximal tubes of the kidneys. There are several causes of Fanconi’s syndrome. Fanconi’s syndrome can be hereditary or it can be caused by vitamin D deficiency, heavy metal and chemical exposure, kidney transplant, or caused by an underlying disease such as amyloidosis. Should the cause of Fanconi’s syndrome be hereditary, the symptoms usually develop during infancy. Fanconi’s syndrome causes damage to the kidneys and to the bones. Although there is no cure for Fanconi’s syndrome, treatment can prevent the damage for getting worse and can even, in rare cases, reverse it.

Some of the symptoms of Fanconi’s syndrome may be:

Treatments For Fanconi's Syndrome

The treatment for Fanconi’s syndrome is sodium bicarbonate supplements to neutralize the high acidity in the blood, potassium supplements, and vitamin D and phosphate supplements to treat bone disease. Should the case of Fanconi’s syndrome be severe, a kidney transplant may be required in cases of kidney failure.
