Agranulocytosis
General Information on Agranulocytosis
Agranulocytosis is a condition in which there is a marked reduction in the normal number of white blood cells (either neutrophils or granulocytes) circulating within a person’s blood stream. These are the cells which the body’s immune system first uses to fight bacterial infections. Agranulocytosis is often caused by an underlying autoimmune disorder, cancer treatment, or exposure to certain toxins and medications. It is not contagious.
Symptoms of Agranulocytosis
Symptoms may include:
Fever
Aching and discomfort
Sore throat
Weakness
Ulcers that do not produce any pus (often located in the mouth or throat)
In addition to these, any sign of an infection present in someone who has suffered from agranulocytosis in the past may want to consider seeing a doctor as this can result or signify recurrence.
Treatments For Agranulocytosis
A doctor will perform an examination, based upon your symptoms, and will run blood tests and/or urine tests or a bone marrow biopsy in order to confirm diagnosis. After diagnosis has been confirmed, treatment may include hospitalization and intensive care as well as isolation in order to protect you from any opportunistic infections. If it is deciphered that your illness is the result of an underlying infection, you will be taken off whatever drug has been deemed responsible. Other treatment, such as stem cell transplants, may be used to help your body produce more of the necessary white blood cells. If you are experiencing symptoms similar to those associated with agranulocytosis, consult your doctor immediately. If left untreated, agranulocytosis may permit life-threatening or even fatal infections to be contracted.
