Zenker's Diverticulum
General Information on Zenker's Diverticulum
Zenker’s diverticulum is a condition in which a pouch in the walls of the lower throat develops. In those affected by Zenker’s diverticulum, food constantly falls into this pouch when swallowed until it fills up. Once the pouch is filled, it then causes the affected person to have difficulty swallowing, choking, coughing, and to regurgitate food. This happens increasingly while the affected person is lying down. There is no known cause of Zenker’s diverticulum. However, it is thought to be caused by weak locations in the lining of the walls of the lower throat. Zenker’s diverticulum is typically seen in those that are over the age of forty-five.

Treatments For Zenker's Diverticulum
The treatment for Zenker’s diverticulum is surgery. There are two forms of surgery that may be performed to treat Zenker’s diverticulum. The first form of surgery is when the pouch is cut out of the throat or turning the pouch inside out so that the pouch can no longer fill. The second form of surgery is when the pouch is closed either by stapling or with a laser. In most cases of Zenker’s diverticulum, no treatment is necessary and the condition is merely viewed as an inconvenience.
