Warts

General Information on Warts

Warts are small growths on the skin caused by any of 80 or more related human papillomaviruses. Warts are most common in children, and least common in the elderly, but can develop at any age. Warts are most commonly spread from one area of the body to another, instead of from one person to another. Sexual contact, however, is often enough to spread genital warts. Although warts may cause distress , they are generally harmless, with an exception being certain types of genital warts that may cause cervical cancer in women. Warts are distinguished by their shape and where they are located on the skin.

Symptoms of Warts

Common Warts- Firm growths that typically have a rough surface. Common warts can be round or irregularly shaped, and range from yellow, grey, or brown in color. Common warts are usually 1/2 inch or less in diameter. A common wart is most often found on the face, knees, fingers, and around the nails.

Plantar Warts- Found on the sole of the foot. Plantar warts are likely to be hard and flat, with a rough surface. Plantar warts that appear on the toes or the top of the feet are usually raised and fleshier. Similar to the Common wart, Plantar warts are also grey, or brown in color but may have a small black center. If a doctor shaves the surface of a plantar wart, the wart tends to bleed from tiny spots.

Flat Warts- More common in children and young adults, usually appear in groups as pink, yellowish brown, or flesh colored spots. Flat warts are most commonly found on the face or hands.

Genital Warts-Appear on or around the sex organs. Typically genital warts are irregular shaped, often with a cauliflower-like texture.

Treatments For Warts

Most warts will disappear on their own in about a year or two, however there are many methods used to remove warts. Warts can be treated with chemicals such as salicylic acid, cantharidin, or liquid nitrogen. Another wart removal method would be treatment with a laser or electrical current. Some of these treatments can be found over the counter, while others require a visit to your doctor.
