Testicle Torsion

General Information on Testicle Torsion

Testicular torsion is a condition characterized by the twisting of the spermatic chord of the testicle. If this occurs, testicular torsion may cause severe damage to the functionality of the testicle. Immediate treatment is necessary in order to avoid losing the damaged testicle. Most incidents of testicular torsion occur in only one testicle. Though this condition may occur at any age, it is most common in males between the ages of 12 and 20 years old.

Symptoms of Testicle Torsion

Sudden pain in one of the testicles (Milder pain may be apparent off and on before the initial onset begins. This initial onset is most common in the evening.)
Swelling or redness of the scrotum
Sweating
Nausea
Vomiting
Increased frequency of urination
Fever (Sometimes)

Treatments For Testicle Torsion

Appropriate treatment usually requires immediate surgery . However, in some cases, gentle and precise manipulation of the testicle with the hand may be sufficient in undoing the twisting that has occurred. Regardless of the outcome, surgery is still recommended to prevent further testicular torsion. This surgical process involves untangling the spermatic chord and attaching both, the affected testicle as well as the unaffected testicle, to the scrotal wall in order to prevent recurrence. If you are experiencing symptoms similar to those listed above talk to your doctor immediately for further consultation.
