Strep Throat
General Information on Strep Throat
Streptococcal infection, commonly called strep throat, is an infection of the pharynx (throat) caused by a group A streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. Although streptococcus bacterium can be responsible for several types of infection, strep throat is by far the most common. Strep throat is very contagious. In some cases, strep infection can be present in someone not exhibiting any symptoms. This is called the ‘carrier state’. The person is carrying the germs of the bacteria without suffering the associated symptoms. In this state, strep throat is still contagious. Strep throat is most common in children, but the condition can occur at any age.
Symptoms of Strep Throat
Symptoms of strep throat include:
Rapidly onset throat pain (may be severe)
Throat pain increases when swallowing
Headache
Fever
General feeling of illness
Swollen glands in neck
Bright-red tonsils
Specks of pus on tonsils (sometimes)
Children may present with additional symptoms such as:
Nausea
Vomiting
Treatments For Strep Throat
Because pharyngitis (inflammation of the throat) can be caused by viruses, allergies, and other factors, physical examination is usually insufficient to diagnose strep throat. A basic throat culture or rapid strep test can confirm diagnosis. Antibiotics such as penicillin and throat pain relievers are usually prescribed. With treatment, symptoms usually disappear within a few days. Antibiotics will need to be continued for 1 to 2 weeks. If left untreated serious complications such as rheumatic fever or scarlet fever may develop. However, with proper treatment, complications are extremely rare.
If you are suffering from symptoms similar to those listed above, contact your health care provider for further diagnosis.
