General Information on Serum Sickness
Serum sickness is the immune systems reaction against large amounts of foreign proteins in the bloodstream. Serum sickness is a type of allergic reaction. The most common cause of serum sickness is the proteins found in horse serum. Horse serum is most commonly used in antivenoms given to treat spider bites, snake bites, and other poisonous bites and stings.
Symptoms of Serum Sickness
Some of the symptoms of serum sickness may be:
Rash
Fever
Joint pain
Hives
Swollen lymph nodes
Liver damage
Kidney damage
Treatments For Serum Sickness
The treatment for serum sickness is antihistamines and corticosteroids. In some cases, intravenous fluids may be given. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required.
